Residents of the Municipality of Serres and visitors

01.09.2017 – 31.11.2021

In the framework of the CULTURAL DIPOLE project, funded by the Interreg V-A “Greece - Bulgaria 2014-2020” Cooperation Programme, the Municipality of Serres restored a listed building in the Papalouka former military camp and turned it into a Contemporary Art Museum that will host the modern art collection of Constantin Xenakis, a world-famous artist. The Museum will enrich the city of Serres with a special cultural pole of attraction for the local community and the visitors of the city. The restoration will turn the listed building into a nearly zero energy one, adding to the global goal for sustainable development.

The project has been implemented in the framework of the CULTURAL DIPOLE project, funded by the Interreg V-A “Greece - Bulgaria 2014-2020” Cooperation Programme. The Municipality of Serres partnered with the Municipality of Petrich, Bulgaria and two Universities – the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Democritus University of Thrace. For the implementation of the project the Municipality of Serres cooperated with the Service of Modern Monuments and Technical Works of Central Macedonia, of the Ministry of Culture, the Prefecture of Central Macedonia and the Ministry of National Defence.

The visitors will be presented with the central core of Constantin Xenakis’ artistic and existential reflection as the exhibits will cover all the artistic periods of the artist’s work. The creation of an accessible Museum to people with disabilities in terms of physical and sensory accessibility and, also, the creation of a nearly zero energy building are both linked to the global goal of sustainable development. Valorisation of cultural heritage and promotion of tourism in Serres.

The creation of a contemporary art museum that will host approximately 200 works of art by the world-famous late artist Constantin Xenakis will result in the creation of a cultural pole of international interest in Serres. The restoration of a former building will add to the urban regeneration of the former military camp and will link it to the rest of the cultural spaces in the city. The transformation of a listed building into a nearly zero energy building is a good practice that has already been applied to other projects.
