MITSIS HOTELS

Biodiversity & Ecosystem Restoration

The main objective of the “Biodiversity & Ecosystem Restoration” initiative by Mitsis Group is to actively contribute to the protection and restoration of biodiversity in the destinations where the Group operates. As a leading hospitality provider in Greece, Mitsis Group recognises its environmental responsibility and aims to integrate biodiversity conservation into its daily operations. By aligning with internationally recognised standards, the initiative seeks to support long-term ecosystem resilience, ensure the sustainability of natural resources, and maintain the authenticity of the tourism experience.

The initiative addresses both internal and external audiences. It targets local communities affected by environmental degradation, hotel guests who interact with the natural surroundings, and employees who are involved in sustainable practices. Moreover, it seeks to engage younger generations, particularly students, through educational and participatory environmental actions. By extending its impact beyond corporate boundaries, the initiative encourages a broader culture of environmental stewardship.

The initiative began in 2024 and is designed as a long-term commitment. It involves continuous and recurring environmental activities such as annual tree planting, regular beach clean-ups, and year-round biodiversity monitoring. As part of the Group’s overarching ESG strategy, the initiative is not a one-off campaign but an evolving programme with sustained impact. It is intended to grow in scale and scope over time, reinforcing Mitsis Group’s vision for sustainable hospitality.

Launched in 2024, the initiative encompasses a series of environmental actions led by Mitsis Group. These include the reforestation of a 350-hectare fire-affected forest area in Rhodes, in collaboration with the environmental NGO “Gia ti Fisi.” Activities consist of planting endemic trees, cultivating local plants, and maintaining natural vegetation to restore biodiversity. Additionally, in partnership with WWF Hellas, six hotels adopted nearby beaches under the “Adopt a Beach” programme, conducting scientific monitoring and clean-ups. In 2025, 13 Mitsis Group beaches received the prestigious Blue Flag certification, while all hotels maintained the Travelife Gold Certification, highlighting their adherence to high sustainability standards, especially in biodiversity protection and ecosystem monitoring.

The initiative is built on strong partnerships with leading environmental organisations. Mitsis Group partnered with “Gia ti Fisi” for the large-scale reforestation project in Rhodes and collaborates with WWF Hellas for the national “Adopt a Beach” programme. These partnerships provide credibility, scientific expertise, and structured methodologies, ensuring the effectiveness and integrity of the environmental actions. Such collaborations are instrumental in aligning the Group’s sustainability efforts with national and global environmental priorities.

Employees play a central role in the initiative, participating in tree planting and forest clean-up activities. Their involvement reinforces the company’s internal culture of sustainability and enhances environmental awareness among staff. By engaging in field actions and applying eco-friendly practices in the workplace, employees contribute meaningfully to the Group’s ESG goals. Their participation also sets an example for guests and communities, fostering a shared sense of responsibility and collective impact.

The environmental actions take place in key locations where Mitsis Group operates. The reforestation project is located in Rhodes, where a significant forest area has been impacted by wildfires. The coastal clean-up and monitoring efforts are carried out on beaches adjacent to six Mitsis hotels across different destinations in Greece. Additionally, all hotel premises are included in the Group’s broader biodiversity strategy, ensuring that landscaping and resource use practices across all properties support ecological integrity.

The initiative has yielded tangible results for the audiences it engages. In Rhodes, 120 endemic trees were planted, and two major forest clean-ups were completed with participation from both employees and students. Local beaches adopted by Mitsis hotels are now systematically monitored for pollution, with data collected according to scientific protocols. Guests are also sensitised to environmental issues through on-site activities. These outcomes not only enhance environmental conditions but also promote education, awareness, and active citizenship among all stakeholders involved.

The initiative strengthens Mitsis Group’s reputation as a responsible and forward-thinking hospitality leader. By maintaining prestigious environmental certifications such as Blue Flag and Travelife Gold, the Group ensures operational excellence aligned with international sustainability criteria. These recognitions enhance customer trust, attract environmentally conscious travellers, and demonstrate leadership in sustainable tourism. Moreover, the initiative reduces the Group’s ecological footprint and reinforces its long-term commitment to sustainable growth and community well-being.
